michael nutter, a long-time friend of joe biden, and republican party chairman -- a confidant of paul ryan. mayor nutter, stand by with me, and i want to get to the party chairman, and we'll be back with you. mr. chairman, thank you for joining us. i want to talk about the great burden of great expectations. there was a cnn poll, and who is going to win the vice presidential debate? the answer was biden, 35%, ryan, 55%. many many ways this mirrors what happened to the presidential debate? everyone thought president obama would win, so there's great expectations here for ryan. how much of a microscope do you think there will be on him? >> i'm not so sure about that. i mean, i don't dispute your polling there, but i think most people understand that joe bayeden has been debating for a long time. i mean, since the early 1900s. he has been debating. >> he knows his stuff. >> right. i think what you see, though, in some of that polling is that some of the, you know, joe biden as of late put his foot in his mouth a few times in very public ways. he said that the middle class was crushed under, y

i think the vice presidential debate is going to be important because joe biden basically debated sarah palin to a draw. if they haven't we'd still be talking about sarah palin's poor debate performance. she was great. this is important because the democratic party has done great through clinton and obama, their last two presidents, of talking about theryan is going to be the one to save entitlements into the future. it's going to be fascinating. republicans are not accustomed to having the 42-year-old talking about generational change in politics. >> we're out of time. we'll see everybody tomorrow morning. cnn newsroom with carol costello starts now. >> immoral, illegal and making the united states hate it around the world. a group of american activists are spreading that around in pakistan. live from islamabad. >>> a new government report shows two companies that employ thousands of americans may actually pose a security concern for the united states. >>> nascar drivers are questioning their safety after a 20 car pile-up at one of nascar's most famous tracks. why one driver call

. >> among those on his team, colonel joe kittenger who holds the 52-year-old record baumgartner is trying to break. he helped develop the astronaut program. >> beautiful. beautiful. >> reporter: he is no stranger to death-defying stunts. he has base jumped from the world's tallest buildings, set a record from the lowest such jump off rio's christ the redeemer statue and completed the first crossing of the english channel with a specifically made fiber wing. free falling from the edge of space is a whole new ball game. >> i guess people imagine someone diving off a diving board. you have to keep that position, don't you? because it would be very easy to spin out of control. >> the first 30 seconds you cannot use the air and that requires really stable exit. that's the reason we practice a lot of bungee jumps. >> perfect. >> just to get the right motion in to my mind. >> are you not scared in any way? >> well, i am scared because you go up to 120,000 feet which is a hostile environment. no matter how much you prepare yourself, you never know how it turns out until you do it for real. >>> ju

was in florida, a key swing state. late their week, the running mates duke it out in their debate. joe biden and paul ryan face off in the only vice presidential debate in kentucky. and a new poll by the university of denver, where last week's presidential debate was held, gives president obama a slight edge over mitt romney in colorado, a key swing state. 47% to 43%. paul steinhauser joins us live now. what do you make of all this? >> reporter: the new poll numbers. those are pretty much in line, john, with what we saw prior to the debate. other polls conducted in colorado, as you mentioned, a key battleground state, where the president had a slight edge, same story. this new university of denver poll. among independents, the president has a double-digit lead. when are we going to see more polls? you're going to see a bunch over the next 48 hours the next couple of days leading up to the vice presidential debate. a bunch of major organizations, including cnn, are in the field right now. in key battleground states and with national surveys, john. >> the president coming off of the heels of w

of modern life. the top searches on google for the vice presidential debate were joe biden, malarkey, and who is winning the debate, but search engines can also raise eyebrows, for instance, when i type completely wrong into the google image's search, i get a lot of photos of mitt romney. >> reporter: google says that it was unintentional, they picked up romney's only description of his 47% remarks. we saw a similar situation on bing. >> for a search engine, they really rely on what is around the image to learn what it is about. if you put words, completely wrong, they think i guess it is relevant for completely wrong. >> reporter: sometimes it is intentional, these are called google-bombs, in the mid-2,000s, they put president bush at the top of the google page. google later limited the practice. intentional or not, a search brings up "debate fail," but also people like governor romney, and one time presidential hopeful, john kerry. and speaking of kerry, who was accused of flip-flopping on the issues, the conservative bloggers managed to put his search word as "waffle". >> is this

and only vice presidential debate between joe biden and paul ryan. democratic congressman tim ryan joins us this morning from the crucial swing state of ohio where an appeals court decided on friday that early voting will be reinstated for the three days that lead up to election day. nice to see you. thank you for taking with us. >> good to be with you. >> appreciate that. let's talk a gallup poll to start with. you can see in the time since the debate, it looks as if mitt romney has gained points. president obama has lost points. i think you guys have the wrong poll up there. i have september 30th to october 7th and then october 4th through 6th as you can see, early on, the president leading by five points, now neck and neck. and then if you take a look at what did a better job in last week's debate, that was a poll question, republicans say no surprise, 97% think it was mitt romney who did a better job. i'm wondering who the 2% of republicans who thought president obama -- that would be -- independents. 70%. throw that poll up again. i think that's a critical number. how worried are you a
